History of Kosi Bay
The Kosi Bay system is one of the most beautiful and pristine lake systems on the African coast.
Consisting of four lakes – Amanzimnyama, Nhlange, Mpungwini and Makhawulani – the system is connected by meandering channels and fringed wetlands before it runs into the Indian Ocean via a shallow channel and estuary.
Kosi Bay is known for its exceptional fishing, snorkeling, wildlife, bird watching and crystal clear waters. More than 250 bird species have been identified here, including rare palmnut vultures and Pel’s Fishing owl.
About Kosi Thonga Safaris
My passion for nature began during my early childhood while I was still in school. On weekends and school holidays, I assisted guests visiting the Kosi Bay Resort as a tourist assistant (gillie). In 2014, I obtained my skipper’s license, enabling me to enhance the guest experience by serving as a local skipper.
In 2016, I joined Kosi Forest Lodge as a skipper guide while pursuing my Level 1 nature guiding certification. By 2018, I had completed my NQF Level 4 in nature guiding and began working as a skipper guide with Heritage Safaris in St. Lucia. Unfortunately, my time with Heritage was interrupted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to job loss.
Although my company had been registered since 2019, I was not fully committed to it until after losing my job. This prompted me to focus on it full-time. I am proud to be the first registered tourist guide in the Kosi Bay area.
